1992 Johnson Nitro 150hp. Please help.

I have a 1992 Johnson Nitro 150hp. I bought the boat used and the first time I took it out in started getting a constant alarm warning. I'm new to boats so I didn't know what was. I unplugged the buzzer because it was driving me nuts. Ok. Not knowing it was an overheating warning now it's not sounding. The boat would run fine for a min and then bogg down like it wasn't getting fuel so I assumed it was a fuel issue. I noticed that my primer bulb was going flat and not hard so I changed it. I also made sure everything else was flowing good as far as the fuel. I ran it off a spare gas tank and line from a John boat and it still stalled and cut off. Run great for a min then crap out. All of a sudden run great again and than die at full throttle. So now my focus went from gas to overheating. Also let me mention that I mix the oil myself. I think the pump was bypassed. I just pulled the bottom end off and changed the empeller and water pump. Now knowing that the buzzer was a warning I plugged it back up. Took it out today for the first time since the new water pump kit and it ran fine for a minute then it bogged down again with a constant alarm warning. Could it be a bad sensor or something? Would that cause it to run like crap and then be fine again? When the alarm goes off the motor is still pretty much cool to the touch. I'm about to just buy a Mercury. Please if you can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hook that buzzer back up... it's the only warning you'll get that protects that very expensive engine!

(VRO Horn Warnings)
(J. Reeves)

NOTE: I retired around 1991/92. Possibly some of the later V4 engines and others may also incorporate a fuel vacuum switch that would enable a fuel restriction warning to sound as mentioned below, an unknown factor to myself.

1 - A steady constant beep = Overheating - The V/6 engines, possibly some others, have a fuel restriction warning which is also a steady constant beep.

2 - A beep every 20 or 40 seconds = oil level has dropped to 1/4 tank. (Late model engine = Every 40 seconds)

3 - A beep every other second = VRO failure, air leak in oil line, oil restriction, (anything that would result in a lack of oil being supplied to the engine).

NOTE - If the warning horn is the black plastic (overpriced) three wire type horn, the warning horn should beep once when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. If it does not, it is either faulty or someone has disconnected it (a stupid move!). At any rate, if it does not beep which indicates that the horn is non functional, find out why and do not run the engine until the problem is corrected.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

I did hook the buzzer back up. It also does chirp when you turn the key. I've changed the water pump and empeller. Today I still got the constant buzzer. The motor felt cool to the touch. I'd wait for a few minutes and fish a little and it would be fine for a bit and then do it again. When I got home I started looking into it and found the 2 thermostats and took them out and there was trash in them. I ordered new ones. I'll see if that works. The fuel restriction is something that I need to also look into. It seems like when this happens that the motor isn't getting fuel.

Look for your fuel restriction switch. It should be by the VRO and have a tan wire going to it. Disconnect that and if the horn stops blowing you have restriction problems. The switch is plumbed into the fuel system.
