i bought a used 1992 johnson 150 attatched to a 19.5' nitro bass boat. This is the sequence of events:
1. Put the boat in the water-it ran at full power for 2 minutes and stopped dead like it seized up. would not start used trolling motor to get back.
2. brought it to mechanic and told him what happened. When i picked it up he said "its fine runs great". I was confused.
3. put it back in the water and it ran at full power for 2 minutes and stopped dead like it seized up. thank you trolling motor.
4. brought it back to same dealer and said "what the $#%@". This time he actually brought it to a lake and lo and behold, it ran for 2 minutes and stopped like it seized up.
He said it needed a new power head (without really even looking at it). I think he was embarrassed form the first visit.
5. I took it to another dealer and told them the story. They told me the same thing, needs new power head. I didnt want to spend the money to get it fixed so i found a
replacement motor for $2000 so I had it installed.
6. While installing the new motor at a 3rd dealership they told me that the oil resivoir was full of water and it looked like the boat had been flooded.
My question is: if the power head was bad would the motor fire up and run at full power for 2 minutes every single time its run? I spoke to someone (not an expert) but says it sounds like the motor is getting hot and shutting off like the impeller is gone.
Any thoughts?
