1992 evinrude 25hp E25RLEND leaking water at spark plug

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and new to outboards. What a great resource!

I recently picked up a 16ft Aluminum deep V-hull fishing boat with 25 hp Evinrude.
The boat had been sitting in a garage for 6 years, but was properly winterized for the duration.
with fresh gas, gas line and a fresh battery it fired right up with a flusher kit in the backyard and pissing water out of the water pump just fine.

Problem is its leaking water around the spark plug area(s) in a few places.
Looks to me like the cyclinder head/water cover gasket?

How big of an issue is this?
I will attempt to fix it myself of course, but has it done any damage to any other components running it with the leaks?

so i removed the water cover and scraped and cleaned all the surfaces on the head and cover face

the cover seems to be warpped inbetween the spark plug holes, about the size of a 50 cent piece (roundish) warped area

how big a deal is this?

looks like previous owner replaced the gasket one time already and hacked jobbed it, with some additional sealant...maybe to compensate for the warped area...

I'm planning to swap in a new thermostat, current unit looks well used

any input is greatly appreciated!

Use a file on the head to clean it up.--------------Use a file / sandpaper and a piece of glass to clean up the cover.-----Or find new or used cover.
 
A new cover appears to be about $40.00---or find a good used one.-------------Use a file to clean up the head.----------------Assemble with a thin smear of sealer.

I had the boat out for the first time this past sunday and it runs like a top!
of course I dragged the motor on the boat ramp and forgot to put the plug in the boat.....1st time boat owner
I went ahead and did a new water cover as well as the switch and thermostat while I was in there.
I assume it has the stock prop on it, its jumps to plane and tops out at 22mph with GPS
