WE just bought a 1995 Johnson Evinrude 150 from a friend of ours who had it sitting for about 10 years or less. The boat if fine other then it just been sitting. We got the boat and installed 6 new spark plugs and also replaced the water pump. The boat starts up fine and all. But then their are times where the boat doesnt want to engage like it hadno power coming. This happens randomly and so i did a little search and found that sometimes the connectors willbe off contact due to it sitting for so long. My dad went ahead and cleaned out the connectors and reconnected the wires. It started right up then after we shut it off.. about 30mins later try to start it... nothing happens. This being one of the first boats we ever owned.. we are not too firmillair with it. Does anyone have a clue on what it might be?

If it does not want to crank each time you turn the key then look into the " start in nuetral only " switch in the control box.-----There was no mention of checking the carburetors.------A V-6 will run quite nicely on 5 cylinders.----If there is a plugged carburetor you risk major engine damage.

Another thing to consider on a " new to you motor " is whether the oil injection system is in service or whether fuel needs to be mixed at 50:1.----If oil injection is in service you need to verify that it is indeed working properly.

I will tell my dad to check that. The boat was bought from our cousin and if its a bad boat e told us he will refund us. My dad think its that optical sensor that is keeping it from cranking at random times. Simply because he did not know that he wasnt suppose to open that top round lid due to the sensor can go bad ifthe sun makes contact with itand im sure it did a few times. Simply when he turns the key.. no power comes.. but this happens randomly. We can start it up5 times with no prob and then the 6th time it will do nothing.

The optical sensor is not involved with the cranking of the engine !-----The optical sensor is part of the ignition system and not involved in the cranking / starting system.

Terminology is key to solving problems, when you say cranking (motor spining but no ignition), starting (motor spinning with ignition and running), little details lead to the culprit problem. That 6th try and nothing, no reaction at the motor? no click at the starter solenoid? Switchs dont like sitting for long periods of time, corrosion sets in and will give you headaches, the key switch could be intermittant, neutral switch (throttle/shift lever) or the emergency kill switch, could all lead to a no response at the motor. It may time to sort it out, but dont give up, next time the motor doesnt do anything, turn the key off and manually turn the starter motor a quarter turn and try again, just another piece of the puzzle to solve.
