" I removed the lower unit on my 1992 150 Evinrude to replace the impeller. It was worn out and had some sand in it. While I had it apart I check the lube oil and a little water dripped out of the bottom plug so I drained it all out. I took off the prop and there was a ton of fishing line behind it. I want to go ahead and replace the seal on the prop shaft and on the top of the lower unit under the impeller. Is this something I can do? I have replaced seals in wheel hubs and such by prying them out but I don't want to mess up the housing. Do you have to have special tools? If I take it to the local OMC dealer will they charge me an arm and a leg to replace the seals since I already have it apart. Also, the shaft sticking out of the lower unit that goes to the engine has a little side to side wiggle in it. Is this normal? I also noticed that the little plastic screen on the water intake below the impeller is missing some of the "grids" where the holes are on the sides. How do I replace that and what is it called?

One last thing. When I tilt the motor up all the way and it sits for a little while I get oily looking stuff leaking out of the round air intake holes and dripping into the back of the boat. Not much, just enough to make a mess. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance.

"David.... Yes, you can do tha

"David.... Yes, you can do that yourself by prying the old seals out with a screwdriver if you're careful. There are two seals at the propshaft area and also at the driveshaft area. The first seal inserted always faces towards the unit, with the last seal facing out.

The prop shaft seals are identical. Part #334950.

The driveshaft seals are different but look very much alike, so keep them seperate by part number. Part number 329923 would be inserted first and would face down. Part number 329922 would be inserted last and would face out.

I would suggest that you remove the driveshaft seal and bearing housing before removing the seals to simplify matters. Remove the four bolts, then gently pry it out with two screwdrivers, one on each side. It should come out easily.

The screen is called just that.... a water pump intake "screen". Since you're going to replace it, pry it up somewhat, then reach down there with a hook of some kind and pull it out. Gently tap the new screen down until it bottoms out. The part number is 321123.
