"I just received this unit, a 1992 SeaRay 240 BR with 7.4L bravo 1. Not new to boating, but new to this rig.

Have a strong vibration about 2900 rpm and up. When I rev it up in neutral it has a noticable chatter. Any suggestions?

Also, I recently had unit serviced and did not check oil level upon return. I ran the boat for about 5-6 hours and no problem, except for vibration, but when I checked the oil level found it was about 2 quarts over. Also, found some oil in the bilge -- wonder what has been hurt and if the two are related.

The vibration did not go away after adjusting oil level.

Appreciate anyone's input.

Thanks."

"Being a 92, maybe time to look at U-joints. does it make clicking or thumping sounds while turning sharp? By chatter, can you alaborate?
2 quarts is a bit much and would certainly get caught up in crank windage but the only thing that comes to mind would be the hydraulic load on oil pan gasket and front and rear seals.
does it still leak with correct level?
also while on muffs look at prop and see if it's running true with no run out. FYI max rpm on muffs or neutral is 1500 rpm per merc.
Oil level wouldn't cause damage as to cause
vibration.

Make sure the oil level isn&#3

Make sure the oil level isn't being displaced by water in the bottom of the oil pan.

Do you get the sense that the vibration is coming from the drive or the engine?

If the engine runs smoothly w/

If the engine runs smoothly w/o shaking like it has a miss then look at the front engine mounts and rear bolts.
