I am having a shutdown issue with my Mercury. The engine shuts down as if it is getting a signal from the kill switch. It doesn't spit or sputter, just shuts down. It does this from idle or while throttled up. I cleaned the carbs and it ran great on ears. It shut down the other day and had to be towed back to dock. The next morning it cranked and ran for about 2 min. Then shut down and would not start back up. Are there any other kill signals on this engine or just the kill switch? Is there a way to bypass this on the engine to test it?

Sounds like you have a chaffed wire on the stop circuit somewhere.

Trace any of the black with yellow stripe wires you can find and make sure they haven't lost their plastic cover and are contacting anything metal.

I think I got it fixed. I disconnected the wiring harness and icolated the engine. The I jumped the start solenoid. It fired right up. I reconnected the harness and lost the spark. I cut the ground wire to the key switch and i t cranks every time. The key switch must have gone bad inside.
