My buddy has a 1992 9.9 Johnson J10RENA he needs a carb is there an up grade that might fit this motor as the original is obsolete? I was told that part # 436779 may be a replacement any thoughts? thanks.

I believe that part # is for a 94 and newer 15 hp motor. Try Ebay there are usually a couple on there and should be able to get it for less than $100. What is wrong with the carb he has most of the pieces are available to rebuild the carb.

Isnt it normally the plastic cover the slow needle screws into the culprit? Always install a new gasket and dont overtighten the screws they are prone to cracking.

This guy is a pretty good auto mechanic he feels it is wore out. It idles good and runs good until you open it up it starts out ok then starts slowing down and missing lots of water coming out so it is not getting hot. What parts do you guys recommend he replace to fix this.

Nothing close to a car always start with the basics. Check the compression three times engine cold, check for open air spark gap test it must jump a gap of at least 7/16 inch gap. Go through the fuel system starting at the tank, pull the strainer in the tank and confirm it is clean and the fuel is fresh. Pull the fuel pump apart and if the diaphram is stiff put in a rebuild kit. Replace all the fuel lines and rebuild the carb. If it idles good there is probably nothing wrong with the carb just soak all the metal parts overnight in carb cleaner and blast all the circuits with high pressure water and blow dry. Carefully clean the high speed jet with a welding tip cleaner then install a new float needle and seat. Lightly surface the carb flange and install a new gasket and just get it snug do not overtighten it down then adjust engine sync between the throttle opening and spark advance.
