I had the boat out thsi weekend and it ran perfect all day and after dropping passangers off at the dock I put it in reverse to pull away while the trailor was backed up and as soon as I put it in forward there was no movement. THe engine seemed to be running fine, no knocking or rattleing sounds, just the prop did not turn. Any ideas on where I should start?

Re: 92 4.3 mercruiser no prop movement?

engine coupler (engine hub) this drives the drive shaft of the outdrive. or prop hub this drives the prop.........lol
put boat in water, start engine, leave in neutral, open engine cover, look at back of engine, should see the drive shaft spinning. if not its the coupler. If it is then most likely the prop hub.

I just had a friend check it while it was out of the water and he said he could turn the prop forward and backwards while it was in gear and mentioned one of the worm gears being shot?
Would either of these problems result in the purchase of a new sterndrive?

Re: 92 4.3 mercruiser no prop movement?

If its the coupler, would there be metal shavings in the back of the motor on the floor? I looked back there and didn't see any.

Re: 92 4.3 mercruiser no prop movement?

we put it in gear and the prop moved however it would slip if there was any resistance.

Re: 92 4.3 mercruiser no prop movement?

If the motor is overheating then it's the coupler. See any rubber pieces in the bilge?

So say you try a different prop and it doesn't fix it then it's the coupler or the drive.

Drain the drive oil what do you see? Coupler went the motor got to come out.

It was the drive coupler and the motor is being yanked right now. Thanks for the input and learned a lot from reading posts on this sight.
