I have a 92 Johnson 3HP Model J3RENM that I'm trying to bring back to life. My issue is that the timer base is froze up (could not move it with throttle cable or my hand).
History of outboard: I acquired it in the fall of last year and tinkered with it a bit. When I put it down, I could pull it over and was getting spark. I also put a new carb kit in it. I let it sit in my garage in a vertical position since the fall and picked it up again last week. First issue was I could not pull it over- completely froze up. I used Mystery Oil for a week and got it freed up. I believe the throttle cable had been froze up at that time but didn't realize it until trying to free up the pistons. Other than that, the history is unknown for the most part.
Where I'm at: I've pulled the flywheel and removed the 3 screws to the timer base but it would not come off the shaft. I tried Mystery Oil and Liquid Wrench- which didn't touch it. I finally decided it had to go and pried it off til it broke. I'm looking at a metal housing around the shaft with teeth on it now (which I'm thinking is part of the timer base and will need to be removed). I've ordered a new timer base and waiting for it to come in.
Question: Does that metal housing with the teeth need to be removed (sure I'll know once I get the new timer base) and although the timer base has been removed and a new one en-route, I'm assuming my issue still remains and I need to free up where it goes around the shaft so the new base will move- correct? any suggestions? I'm new to posting here and not a mechanic but handy and daring enough to give myself more headaches! Thanks in advance!
