"I posted a note a few days ago about problems with my 1991 Mercury 25 HP tiller motor. After messing with the linkages, it seems to go into forward gear now. So, I took it to the water to find out if it would run well.

I put it into the water this morning and it went into gear fine. However, when throttling up, the motor began to ‘buck’ (for lack of a better word). It seemed to be fine at low speed, but as soon as I would give it gas, it would start having problems. It seems to be fine going in reverse.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance!"

"Kyle, did it appear that the "gear" is slipping or the motor itself is hesitating?"

"Hmm... I don't think it was slipping. there was no abnormal sounds (at least none that I noticed) which I could attribute 'slipping' too. Also, I don't think it was hesitating. Again, not that I noticed."

"Just trying to deterimine if it's a gear problem causing it to "buck" or an engine problem - because you may have two different issues here.

I would think that if the gears were locking on you and causing it to buck, that it would either stall the motor or something would "give" for sure. However, it could be slipping - you may have lost a few teeth in the gear. That could be checked by draining the lower unit and inspecting the oil for metal particles/pieces...

If the bucking is caused by a fuel stoppage however that would make it totally unrelated to your earlier issue of not going in gear..."

"if it wasn't going into gear earlier, than I'll bet the linkage is preventing the shift shaft from going all the way in gear. The bucking is probably the clutch dog slipping, you will destroy the lower unit if you don't get this fixed. Verify neutral, shift it into fwd, remove linkage and manually shift into forward, compare the 2 fwd positions."

"If I recall correctly, the linkage from the control is a push rod that connects to another rod that crosses the front of the motor. There, it connects to a vertical rod that pushes/pulls up and down to shift into gear – correct?

I will take a look at this today. How is the clutch adjusted?"

"No adjustment on the clutch dog, despite the name there is no (clutch). Thats why I said get it fixed before its to late.
The clutch looks more like a dogs paw, 3 male paws that fit into 3 female notches. If they slip it feels like someone kicking the boat or hitting a stump. Too many kicks and the paws don't fit in the notches."

"I just wanted to provide an update on this problem. The service guy told me that the drain plug magnet had come free, split in two and stuck to the clutch dogs. So it would engage, but hit the magnet and slip off.

Repair amounted to cleaning up the magnet pieces, a new drain plug and some gaskets! Far better then I expected!

Thanks again for all of your help!"
