" My mechanic informed me this

" My mechanic informed me this spring that the bottom two cylinders on my 1991 Johnson 88SPL had low compression. He said I could keep running it with no problem but to not run at WOT (which I never do anyway).

Recently it started running really rough. I pulled the plugs and two looked pretty normal, if a bit worn; one had stuff (carbon?) in the gap and on another one, the ground electrode was bent down towards the center electrode. I see no evidence of anything actually hitting the electrode, but it sure was bent out of whack - my mechanic says this may be from water seeping into the combustion chamber and hitting the hot plug tip, causing it to bend. I tried to look into the cylinder, and see no evidence of anything being in there that shouldn't be. Is my mechanic right?

I replaced all the plugs but haven't tried to run the motor yet - I was told they are factory gapped, but I've always gapped them myself in the past - do I need to check the gap, or are they good to go?

Is there anything else I should be doing?
Is this motor worth trying to rebuild? It has gobs of hours on it (at lest 1000), I'm certain. "

Your motor needs an overhaul

Your motor needs an overhaul !!! Sparkplug electrode bent means a bad bearing or pieces of a broken piston ring in the cylinder.

" Thanks for your response! O

" Thanks for your response! Of course, now I have follow-up questions:

How much does an overhaul cost?
Is it worth it on this particular model?
Will I make it more expensive if I keep running the motor until it quits?

Thanks in advance for your response! "

Pull the cylinder heads and i

Pull the cylinder heads and inspect cylinders.Check for loose piston (crank or rod bearing). If it is a salt water motor it may not be worth the effort but in most cases it is cheaper to repair than to go new .I do not think that water had anything to do with bending a sparkplug.
