1991 Johnson 40hp Outboard Motor

Trim isn't working properly. It will trim up but not down. The motor doesn't even make a noise when pushing the trim button down, but it does when trimming up. Is there a way to manually trim up/down? Any suggestions on what it may be to get trim down to function again?

Swap trim solenoids and see if it now works down but not up. If so you need to replace the bad solenoid.

You could also have a bad trim button.JMO

Any idea what the solenoids look like to swap them? Or where they are located on the motor?

On the drivers side of the boat/engine (starboard) towards the back there is a panel about the size of your hand. Remove that cover & two relays are in there. They are square 1" devices. Swap places with both & see if motor will go down. I suggest changing both relays if that fixes the problem.
