I purchased a 175 last year and the starter shaft assembly went out. I replaced it in the spring and it just went out again. It appears that the spiral gear that makes it engage the flywheel does not have full contact. It jumps gears and strips it out. I checked the part number and it is correct. Any suggestions?

"i would replace,the compl sta

"i would replace,the compl starter..bushings are prob bad,and inst a new shaft etc,..wont fix u up......ck and re-ck,..all the gears..up top.
i would also expect to see magnet damage, and armature rubbing..."

The starter motor is working fine. The problem is in the counter shaft that engages the flywheel. The spiral gear that spins the gear to engage the flywheel is what is striping out. when it engages flywheel the spiral gear inside is not in full contact. Design problem or incorrect installation? Perhaps wrong lubrication?

"ok,....then,i would repl all

"ok,....then,i would repl all items(in kit form,# 31),..and really look at dr gear,#14..& 12.
i have seen many w/worn parts,..but have not had any,i dont think,..w/the spiral gear,damaged.

"I have ordered another new as

"I have ordered another new assembly #31 (part # 434517). The two gears look good, no wear or damage. The spiral gear on the shaft has very little wear, but the bendix is half worn out and allows the gear to slip. Could it be a lubrication problem? Also I have a lot of problems starting and hve to choke it a lot to start. It sometimes dies at idle starving for gas, so I have to start several times while trolling."

"that,might be why your gears

"that, might be why your gears are wearing excessively,if this has been going on awhile.I think,u r doing the right thing,by repl all components in 31.put a little grease on that shaft too,as well as on the gears."

"Put on the new countershaft o

"Put on the new countershaft on the starter and it started right up. However the next time I tried it barely turned over and quit. After checking out batteries and such, I took the starter apart and discovered it had lost some wires into the armature. I have ordered a new starter and selenoid. The other thing I noticed was that when I pump the fuel up with the bulb, It appears to leak back after a while. After about an hour I have to pump it up again. I put pressure on the bulb for several minutes looking for a leak, but could find none. Do you think this is an indication that it would starve for fuel when starting and idling?"

"no--------primer bulbs,..are

"no--------primer bulbs,..are not a scientific,item,,they will leak down,....their only purpose,is to fill the carb bowls,at first start...but,sticking ck valves,in primer bulbs,can cause prob's...."

"u have 2 prob's here ..fi

"u have 2 prob's here ..first,u r burning up starters,....dont worry about the pr bulb..
i reccomend,ordering a NEW starter,not a rebuild or,getting yours rebuilt,...i have had prob w/rebuild for yrs,.....they stick a new set of brushes in,chg u 85 bucks,..and its still not right....armature drags,end cap bushings are worn etc....
get a new one..!"
