"Long story short problem is improved but there still seems to be some issue, it seems like mabye I'm not getting full travel out of the control box in the reverse shift direction.
Between '89 (when boat was new and powered w/ '88 140 HP sea-drives) and 1991 (or '95 when these engines were bought "new") - did anything change with the shifting travel?
I'm thinking of replacing the control box, it still feels fine but I think mabye it's a combination of problems and added play from controls with thousands of hours on 'em may not be helping.. cables were replaced last season.
History:
I've got a pair of these 91 60 degree loopers and had problems getting the shift cable adjustment right on the counter-rotator, cable was adjusted nearly all the way toward reverse and I couldn't find a happy medium that would prevent it from getting stuck in forward while still getting it to shift right into forward while still getting it to shift firmly into reverse..
Advice (good advice BTW - Thanks!) was to check for any loose linkage and set the shift rod adjustment right.
I pulled the lower unit and the shift rod adjustment was *clearly* wrong, way too far down. I set it at 26 5/16 inches (25 inch shaft) per the manual I've got.
I put the lower unit back on and couldn't get it to shift right into forward. Moved it down 2 turns, kinda sorta shifted into foward but was bottoming out - the linkage was hitting the inside of the cowel, moved it down 2 more turns and there is definitely marked improvement. Shift rod is a hair under 26 1/4 now by my measure.
Might try one more turn down, that will be about 1/8 off by the spec but based on the way the linkage seems to be working it seems like it'd perform better.. is this a bad idea? Tolerance is supposidly only 1/32..
Now when I'm in foward I can spin the prop forward and the engine is locked to it and same with reverse.. however it took alot of tinkering with the adjustment to get it to work like that and to me it seems like something is still wrong here.. any little change is gonna throw it off.
I've tinkered alot with various outboards and never had such a hard time getting the shifting right.
Shift rod has no play when you shift manually with the lower unit off - it's got 3 "notches" and it's firmly in or out of gear..
Any other ideas?
Thanks for any/all help -
