"Hello. I have a 1991 or 1992 evinrude 120. My problem is at high rpm's(above 4000). When the engine reaches high rpms it starts to miss(feels like a fish bite) and I think its an electrical issue. It does not do this every time its taken out, Just every now and then. It also seems to do it after running it for 10-15 minutes and letting it sit a while before taking off again. Ive got a feeling it could be a powerpack but would like to get some info on checking the rest of the electrical system first. Thanks"

"I have a 1985 140hp Evinrude with much the same systems. It sounded more like a hiccup and happened mostly when the engine was cold and starting to warm up under throttle, like just after launching. I thought it might be some carbon build up or poor combustion from idling. Eventually the power pack packed it in and the mechanic confirmed that it was first signs of the power pack giving up. I had a friend with an older 70hp. A three cylinder one with a coil for each cylinder. I ran poorly when warmed up and we diagnosed a failed coil by putting an ice pack on it when the symptoms appeared. Good Luck."
