1991 Evinrude 115 shift linkage

I have a 1991 Evinrude tracker 115 hp motor that I want to change the water pump impeller in. I can see the nut that holds the shift rod on but it appears that the only way to really get to it is to remove the carburetors. I think I could possible loosen it and get the shift rod out but putting it back in is going to be a chore. I've watched several youtube videos but none of them show this motor. I'm ready to pull the carbs to get to it hit I thought I would ask for suggestions here first.

No need to remove carburetors.-----No need to remove a bolt.-----Find the hitch pin on the horizontal shaft that goes underneath the carburetors.---Remove that pin with pliers.----Push that same shaft to the port side of the motor and rotate that shaft slightly.----Shift rod should now be released.

I have pulled that pin out but I didn't think it was the right thing. I will try it again and see how it goes. Thanks for your reply!

Try it again.----Push that shaft to the port side and rotate to release the shift rod.---Nothing to it.
