1991 Evinrude 115 Bogging Down

I have just bought a 91' Stratos boat with a 115 evinrude motor. When I took the boat to the lake to try it out, I went out of the no wake zone and tried to open the motor up and it tried to die. I put the motor in neutral and revved it up a little and it finally took off full speed. But if it sets awile(30-40 Minutes) I have the same problem all over again. Like its flooding out or hesitating. The motor will idle in the water and eventually shut off and is very hard to start back. I also think its running too rich. Any ideas? Have no idea if the carbs have ever been re-built or when the plugs were changed. The auto oiler has been unhooked and I'm mixing 50:1. When the motor finally decides to run right, It will push me around 50 M.P.H. Just have a hard time getting it to take off.

Step # 1 is a compression test.---------Most important to establish condition of cylinders / pistons / rings-----Does it help if someone operates the manual fuel pump on takeoff ?

1991 motor and some problems with it and second hand?

I suggest that you will have some work to do.

Listen to advice.

It may well get complicated and expensive.

I dont know about the manual fuel pump. Are you talking about the primer bulb? If so......no we didnt try that. But as I said........just a little hesitation when I first pull out then it runs great. Acts like its not burning off the gas fast enough and flooding.......the guy with me said it was starving for fuel so who knows. Would going to a hotter plug help? Or running some carb cleaner through it help?

careful what you use for carb cleaner! check your fuel line disconnect both ends a take the connectors off make sure they are not being clogged plus the line, ethanol has a tendency to melt the inside liner of the line turning it to tar. It happened to me, lots of hours replacing and cleaning components to make it run right. also take a fuel sample at the motor in a glass jar make sure its not contaminated. Doing all of this will give you a direction to go to next, besides having to hot a spark plug can burn a hole in a piston so careful there as well.

I will check the fuel lines. I've heard the same thing about ethanol and melting fuel lines. Like I said.....The motor runs great once it gets past a certain point.......Just when I'm going at idle speed and lay the throttle the rest of the way down, it tries to die.......After a few seconds of revving in neutral it takes off great.........Somewhat an inconvenience.........just looking for an easy fix.

Pendry3. This can be tricky. Check out my posts as i had a very similar problem.

You may have more than one issue that is causing the bogging.

Step 1: Compression test. Are all cylinders even and within 10% of each other? Wont run right if they're not
Step 2: Spark test. Check that spark will jump 7/16" open air gap. This will highlight a bad coil, power pack, plug lead and range of other electrical items
Step3: Fuel and carbs. As advised above start with fuel lines, then move to fuel pump. Then go to carbs. Dismantle and rebuild is the best. If you need to use carb cleaner then use one that is compatible with two strokes, but it may not solve your problem.

After carbs are clean and fuel lines are good, i would suggest a can of sea foam or some equivalent treatment. Added bonus is that it gets rid of carbon build up, which can make rings stick to pistons and is not a great thing.

On my motor i had a bad power pack on one side, a bad coil and a dirty carbs, which together showed up as bogging and cutting put on take off. Would run like a stabbed rat when i got her up, but to get there i almost had a try a different trick every time and eventually the tricks ran out and she wouldn't get up. Having solved the problems she runs like a dream now.

Good luck

How much did the repairs cost? I checked with a local dealer and they said to bring it in and they would do a tune up and it would cost around $200. But thats if they don't have to order any parts, just cleaning the carb and putting in time ect.

I'm based in South Africa so the parts down here are expensive as there are a limited number of outlets. The labour however sounds about right for what I would pay in this region and it always excludes parts.

I'm not an automotive genius, but I can wield a spanner and screw driver without doing any injury to myself. (most of the time)
Using information from this site, my manual (4USD Download from some arb website) and youtube. I wasn't in a huge rush and managed to do all of the work myself, so I avoided the labour costs.

New Carb Kits from this site for your motor are about USD 17.00 per set ( you need 2), The New new coils are around USD 21.00 each. I bought 4 at the time (Which weren't all needed), and the powerpack I bought used from a dealer who has them from blown motors for around USD 50.00, new on this site yours will be around USD 95.00 ( My motor uses two, yours only needs one).

Most outboard places down here won't touch my 81 motor and those that do also make a healthy margin on the parts as well.

As for diagnostic equipment I paid about USD 20.00 for my compression tester and nothing for the spark tester as I made it from scraps around the garage. I used a normal multi meter for all my resistance and diode testing, but you might need a DVA meter for stator output/timer base and other tests.

It's your call as to what you wish to do, but if you are somewhat mechanically inclined much of what needs to be done I am sure you can do. If not the shop may be your only option, but you may need to be prepared to spend money depending on the issue.

If you aren't sure when last it was done you may also want to change the gearcase oil and the waterpump impellor as they are vital to ensuring an extended life for your motor and can easily be done using the information on this site and youtube.
