My Marine Engine mechanic says that the gearbox on our 5 Litre Ford OMC inboard has seized. He is now struggling to get the nut off the gearshaft to get the bearings out. He has tried to make a special tool but that has not worked. Any ideas or tips

Ayuh,.... Is it an Inboard, with a transmission,..??

Or an OMC I/O, with an Outdrive,..??

It is an I/O with an Out drive. I have now just been to the engineers to take a look myself. They were trying to undo the nut at the wrong end. There is a bigger "nut" (with thread on its outside) that I just had to apply a pin punch and tap with a hammer and the nut came undone. This is the nut just behind the "pinion" gear. the bearing is completely stuffed, the caging holding the balls or roller in place has squeezed out the bearing. It got so hot that part of the plastic covers on the inside of the gearbox casing melted. How can a bearing like his seize up? It had oil. I think the number on the part is 27-18. Mod No. 986700 and serial no T0733391. Can one post pictures on this forum? Is the bearing easily available?
