"Recently purchased a used Lund boat with a 91 Johnson 90HP motor. It has been difficult to start, even after running. Today, I got a no oil alarm briefly (rapid tones), then it cleared. While running back to the dock, it shut down after about 5 minutes at WOT, no alarms. It restarted immediately, ran perfect for another 5, shut down again. Then ran for 2 miles no problem. Restarted to load the boat.In each case when it shut down, I could feel it bogging a bit before it shut down completely. Tried hitting the primer when it began to die. Any ideas?
I know there is a lot of discussion about the VRO system, and running premix as a backup to the VRO.
I am looking to get it through fall, then replace the motor, unless the fix is simple.
Thanks for any help..

Do you still obtain the short

Do you still obtain the short temporary beep when you turn ther key on to show that the horn is still operational?

"I assume that hitting the primer had no effect? If so, disconnect the Black/Yellow wire(s) that lead from the powerpack to the engine's wiring harness RED electrical plug for a test run.

If this corrects the problem, the usual cause is a intermitent short within the ignition switch.

To test the ignition switch, reconnect the black/yellow wires you originally disconnected, then disconnect that same Black/Yellow wire at the ignition switch.

Note that you will not be able to shut the engine down via the ignition switch with any of those wires disconnected.

"Correct, hitting the primer had not effect.
I will try the powerpack/switch test.
Should I not be concerned that this actually a low/no oil problem? Should I temporarily run a premix in case?"

"The low/no oil scenario is reason for concern of course. If it were me, I'd run the premix until the problem is solved."
