Yea I did the same thing. Mine the hose clamp closed the opening. Plastic bent in. One other thought on rebuilding the carb
drill out the core plug and make sure the little holes just inside the throttle plate locations are open. Need it at idle.
They say you can never get enough help. Its up to you to decide what to do with it.

Looking for a little bit of help I’ve been trying to trouble shoot my new boat motor new to me I guess the problems it’s having is I will take it out to the lake it will start up fine runs idles good runs full speed just fine the. After I idle it down a bit and cruise the motor dies out and doesn’t want to start back up it’s still primed the only thing that helps it out is if I tilt the motor all the way up so I’m wondering if maybe I have a problem with the carbs? Or the fuel pump is getting weak and only works decent for about 10 mins any help would be appreciated
I have been going thru the same issue, I have a 91njohnson 70hp, doing same thing, check for spark, I had no spark on cylinder 2 changed coils still same, stator good, issue is coming from power pak, only happens after engine is up to temp, new OEM power pak order, i.will post how it worked. Check for spark after it fails! I had spark in 1 and 3
