1991 40 hp johnson 2 stroke

I was cruising almost wide open and heard a strange noise from motor. Also felt some slight deceleration. Went another 40-50 seconds and slowed down to almost an idle and it quit. It's locked up. Can get almost one complete rotaion from the flywheel. Locks solidly at both ends of rotation. Suspect either a connecting rod or bottom end. Motor is now off the boat. Any ideas where to start?

Pull the cylinder head and look in there.--------------That should tell the story.------------The high revving 2 cylinder is known to do this.
