1991 30 hp 30M Mariner Questions

Purchased a boat and trailer that came with a 30M Mariner

Serial Number: 689 S 231319

I believe this means it is a 1991. Can anyone tell me if this is a Yamaha or Mercury model? From reading earlier posts, if this is a Yamaha, can you identify if it is a model A or C?

Engine runs well, but when cold it is difficult to start, upwards to 15 to 20 pulls. Once engine is hot, starts with first pull. I have put a can of Seafoam in the tank and have sprayed a can of Deep Creep into the carbs. Now it almost start on the 2nd or 3rd pull, put I still have to continue with another 15 to 20 to get it to start when cold. I have also replaced the plugs. Would anyone have any idea as to the problem?

Are there any known concerns with this model?

Yes, it is a 1991 Yamaha built "A" model Mariner - the 30 was never super popular and the one and only run was the A models.

It was an exact copy of Yamaha's own model 30A's which were sold between 1979 and 1985 - so regardless of the Mariner year, it was a late 70's model "technology and parts wise".

The concern with this model is the lack of parts support. Most of the ignition components and many of the carb parts are just not available anymore. And companies like Sierra never got into stocking stuff for these, so if anything major goes you could be doing alot of looking resulting in major down-time.

I am not familiar enough with the 30 to advise on how the choke functions, but that sounds like the possible issue with your cold starts (a typical problem with many makes and models)...
