decided to give it another go. cked spark. #3 & # 5 have spark, no spark on other cyl's. cked ohms on timing sensor per fac man. no reading, no resistance across circuit wires, not grounded to motor. sooo????, does that mean timing sensor is bad ? can't find any wiring in harness or under pp that is bad, wish big oak shade tree would fall & crush boat & motor. quite disgusted with all attempts to fix this problem. missed the whole summer of fishing this year, & was out $3000.+ & still not able to start motor.:(

Re: 91 200hp ve200sleid erratic spark

I have a 1989 225 also with erratic spark. I have spark on number one only, unless it sits with the hood off for a few hours, then it runs fine. There is an outboard ignition system parts company on line with testing guidelines. They say the ohm reading on the timer base circuits should be 1M ohm. One of mine is 30M, the others range from 18 to 20. Im using a digital meter, and it reads very slowly and keeps ranging. I tested a used spare that I have, and all circuits read exactly 10M, without the slow ranging issue. The factory manual has way different readings, but they warn that different types of meters will give different readings due to the meter's impedence. I'm pretty sure my problem is the timer base, but I am going to build the DVA adapter in the previous thread to confirm it, because my engine has power steering, and it is a particular PIA to remove all of that to get to the timer base. Their reference guide might be helpful to you too. Try www.outboardignition.com. Good luck!

ok guys, I finally found my problem!!!!!!!!!! I cked my timing sensor ohms, & grounding, replaced timing sensor, had already put pp back on that mech took off (that was only 3 weeks old) set link & sync. set timing joe's way. Started right up!!!! Wouldn't die when I turned the key off. OH SSSHH........TTTTT, plus had kink in water hose, no water, OH SSSHHH....TTT.Started wiggling wires with welding gloves on, and found where mech broke both ground pins off in rubber boot coming from pp. Pushed old pins out & got good solid connection. starts AND stops now. went to lake ; ran just like old times.. re-cked timing doug selby way, was right on 18. ran great for about 3 hours of wot, idle alittle while, then half throttle. cruised lake & everything works great. got a good woody today. Thank you all for all of your help & great advice!!!!

Regarding meters, you must use an older analog meter to get the proper published results when ohming out the timer base.
The new digital meters do not use enough current to forward bias the diodes in the timer base.
You will get exactly the same autoranging results that martino1 is describing.
Sometimes, you may get by using the diode check function on a digital meter, but that too is iffy.

You can look up troubleshooting guides on the www.cdielectronics.com website, too.

Re: 91 200hp ve200sleid erratic spark

I used a cheap dial/needle type of multimeter to ck ohms & if it was grounded to the block. couldn't ck for voltage. my reading didn't coincide with the fac. man. so I went ahead & replaced it. but now I have an extra pp,& stator & rectifier that are probably still good for future use. thanks for all the help & advice.

Here is the pinout functions of the rubber timer base to powerpack plugs. Only applies to 90s era V6 loopers.

On the starboard rubber connector you have:
A: Blue wire, signal to PP for #1 cylinder.
B: Purple wire, signal to PP for #3 cylinder.
C: Green wire, signal to PP for #5 cylinder.

On the port rubber connector you have:
A: Blue wire, signal to PP for #2 cylinder.
B: Purple wire, signal to PP for #4 cylinder.
C: Green wire, signal to PP for #6 cylinder.

The "D" terminals in each rubber boot are white and black/white wires. The black/white wire supplies 6-12 volts FROM the powerpack TO the timer base, and the white wire is the return to ground for the timer base. Ground for the timer base is provided through the powerpack.

EDITED to add information:

The starboard "D" terminal has the black/white stripe wire, and the port "D" terminal has the white wire.

So, for instance, if you have no spark on #4, you might consider debugging on the port side timer base plug, the purple wire, "B" labelled terminal.

I had one terminal pushing back when mating the two plugs, killing the spark on one cylinder, so I did the work to identify each wire for future use/problems.

I hope this helps someone.

hey doug, I tried talking 2 of my "buddies" into helping me ck timing your way, offered helmet, life jacket, a good strong rope tied off to me. they said hell no!!!. told them to grow some nads, & finally got little brother to help. wasn't bad, slight chop, but didn't take much to double ck. our settings. thanks for your help & knowledgable advice!!!

Re: 91 200hp ve200sleid erratic spark

I figure if I fall off, I will hit the water about 30 feet behind the boat...sorta like wiping out while water skiing....
I am very pleased to know that when you did the Joe Reeves method (setting for 14*) and then comapred while actually underway and got 18*.....
that's very good information for me.
