1991 200 hp Johnson won't shut off

Hello,

Have a '91 200 HP Johnson and having problem with turning it off. Motor starts fine, but when you turn the key off it seems to be running on half the engine. If you turn the key back to "on" the rest of the cylinders turn back on. At first I thought it was the switch, but tested it and the manual was saying bad power pack.

I replaced the power pack this morning and still getting the same problem. Turning the key off or pulling the safety kill seems to drop only half the motor (the left side). With the key off and the motor running on 3 cylinders touching the blk/yel to ground does kill the motor.

Could it still be a bad ignition switch?

Any help would be great.

The kill circuit is...... A black wire leading from ground at the control box connected to the regular "M" terminal of the ignition switch. A black/yellow wire leading from the ignition switch raised tower like "M" terminal back to the main RED electrical connector at the engine.

This single black/yellow wire at the instrument harness RED plug changes into two black/yellow wires at the engine harness RED plug which then leads to the powerpack..... each black/yellow wire when grounded shorts out one engine cylinder bank. A black wire leads from the powerpack to a powerhead ground.

Key ON = The two "M" terminals are not touching = ignition engaged.

Key OFF = The two "M" terminals are touching = ignition shorted out.

Your engine with the key in the OFF position is only shorting out one bank. Either one black/yellow wire from the engine wiring harness to the pack is broken or a portion of the powerpack has failed.

Thanks for the info! Checked out all the black/yellow wires. The wire harness that connects the shift switch had a bunch of bad connectors. Connected the blk/yel directly to the power pack without the shift harness and the motor shuts off. Thanks for the info
