I have a 1990 rude 115 that im not exactly sure what i should be looking for up untill now my seirra book has been great and has helped me diag and repair my engine on 2 occasions but it has always missfired and run rough from an idle to mid throttle after that i really cant tell it seems to run ok it still gets me down the water at 64 mph according to my gps any ideas?

"Could be a simple common prob

"Could be a simple common problem such as a slightly fouled carburetor. To check......

With the carburetor throats accessible and engine running with the problem taking place, carefully insert two fingers into the carburetor throats (acting as a individual manual choke). When the rpms increase slightly and the problem ceases to be, you've found the offending carburetor that requires cleaning.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

"Thanks Joe,
I performed a test very simular to that but not exactly that i will give that a shot, In the meantime i forgot to mention that i noticed some water around the bottom of the engine area the last time, headgasket? thermostat housing? not real sure its hard to see, any common issues in that area?"

"I tried what you asked of me

"I tried what you asked of me Joe and there was no change it still backfires and dies, Could this water be my issue? I think i may be getting water in my lower port side cylinder,
How can i tell for sure that is my problem? In my field we use a block tester"

"is this engine,..new to u?...

"is this engine,..new to u?....what do u mean by backfires?..very loud, thru exhaust,..or spitback thru carbs?had the flywheel off?"

JWB..... I was assuming a carb

JWB..... I was assuming a carburetor spit back (lean) condition. Didn't give a thought to an actual backfire..... good point.

"Suggest to start with the mos

"Suggest to start with the most common problems on these engines:
How is the temp at idle?
(Barely to touch? even at both sides?)
What do the spark plugs look like?
(whitish, brownish, wet, fouled, even in color?)"

"JW, yes the engine is new to

"JW, yes the engine is new to me this is my first boat and it spits back through the carbs and no i have not had the flywheel off but i did set the timing @ 6 btdc idle and i think if im not mistaken 24 off idle, Morten, temp at idle is cool after a lake run but it seems to be very cold natured its very hard to start cold, i can notice a difference in temp from side to side with the port side being warmer after a lake run but no spark knock or anything like that and i can still touch the heads, i will take a temp gun with me next time out to get an accurate recording for you if you wish, the plugs look fouled blackish in color but even on all 4 cyls, compression is at 115,a little fyi for you guys i have been an automotive tech for 32 years now but i am by far no marine tech although i find it rather fun learning about these things so please dont be afraid to ask me anything i will give you an honest answer"

"If 'cold' and un-even

"If 'cold' and un-even temp. change the thermostats!!
Might suggest to take the impeller at the same time.
Running that engine 'cold' is like running a manual choked car a winter day without thermostat and choke!
Idle timing is not a fix setting, that is the 'pick-up' timing when the carbs starts to open.
get an OEM manual to start with."

"Morten thanks i had planned t

"Morten thanks i had planned to do just that i actually have ordered all 3 items and that explanes the blackish color, Jamie i really was wondering if that was my issue is there any testing that i can know for sure or is this a take it apart and look kind of thing?"

"Morten, I wanted to say i am

"Morten, I wanted to say i am sorry for the lack of brain cells, I did know that the idle timing was not a fixed setting rather that it was the pick-up timing and i shall try harder to be more accurate in these terms and discussions, Thanks"

"No problem, easy to mix thing

"No problem, easy to mix things up if not used to the systems.
Normally I think to remember that the engine will be at around 2-4degrees timing at idle when all is ok.
That means carbs just before starting to open.
Should run about 750 IN GEAR and boat 'free'. Gives 900-1000+ in neutral depending on prop pitch."

"Morten, Thanks i will double

"Morten, Thanks i will double check everything as soon as i get this thing running good again and my OEM manual gets here.
Speaking of props how does one determine the pitch of a prop if its not marked anywhere?
All i know about the prop is that it is a preditor
900-1000 is a little too fast although it helps me at idle with the way its running now it grinds when put in gear and it makes docking the boat very difficult, As you stated that is something i guess you have to play with."

'it grinds when put in gea

'it grinds when put in gear'
Quick shift and 'one clunk' is the way to shift.
it is no 'clutch' just steel claws/dogs/notches gripping. Shifting slow and 'grinding' rounds the edges and ruins the gears and clutch-dog. Just smack it in!

"A little added info pertaining to shifting.

(Jumping Out Of Gear - Manual Type)
(J. Reeves)

This pertains to lower units on all OMC manual shift outboard engines, or any OMC engine with lower units defined as a Shift Assist or a Hydro Electric Shift unit which incorporates a "Shifter Clutch Dog".

Within the lower unit, splined to the prop shaft is what is most often referred to as a clutch dog, hereafter simply called dog. The dog has at least two lobes protruding from it on both ends, facing both forward and reverse gear. The forward and reverse gears also have lobes built into them near their center area. When the engine is running, in neutral, the gears are spinning constantly via the driveshaft being connected directly to the powerhead crankshaft, but the propeller does not turn due to the fact that the dog is centered between the two gears, and the dog lobes are not touching either of the gear lobes.

When the unit is put into either gear, shift linkages force the dog (and its lobes of course) to engage the lobes of the gear. The lobes of the spinning gear grab the lobes of the dog, and since the dog is splined to the prop shaft, the propeller turns.

The lobes of the dog and gears are precisely machined, most with right angled edges that could be installed in either direction, and some with angles slightly varied that must be installed in one direction only (one end only must face the propeller). Dogs that can be installed in one direction only, if reversed, even if the dog and both gears were new.... would jump out of gear almost immediately. Keep in mind that the lobes are precisely machined with sharp angles!

Due to improper adjustment or worn shift linkages, but usually due to improper slow shifting, those precisely machined sharp edges of the lobes become slightly rounded. Now, with those lobes rounded, as the rpms increase, the pressure of the gear lobes upon the dog lobes increases to a point whereas they are forced apart (jumping out of gear), and due (usually) to the shift cable keeping tension on the engines shift linkages..... the unit is forced back into gear giving one the sensation that the engine has hit something, and the cycle continues.

Some boaters with manual shift engines have the mistaken belief that shifting slowly is taking it easy on all of the shifting components..... Wrong! Shifting slowly allows those precisely machined sharp edges of the dog and gears to click, clank, bang, slam against each other many times before they are finally forced into alignment with each other..... and this is what rounds those edges off! The proper way to shift is to snap the unit into gear as quickly as possible.

"Wow, Joe thats some great info i really do want to thank you for taking the time to post all of that for me, that will come in handy as a matter of fact i really want to thank all of you for your help so far with my issue"

"OK not funny sorry, I love my girls i have 3 and i wouldnt trade them for anything, A wife and 2 children but these women are like my boat sometimes they are hard to understand."

So wo

"HA HA, Thats good !!

So would you guys say that i need to at least take a good look at the reeds and at least eliminate the possibility of having a weak leaf and clean the carbs would that be a good starting point? If so how difficult is the task for both?"

"Start with correcting the tem

"Start with correcting the temp issue, or at least check!
Never had problems with OEM reeds, unless engine has been running far above rec rpm!
The old 15 with rpm of 7500 was not easy either!
A carb 'rebuild' will never hurt, if done correctly.
However quite often problems may be related to fuel system outside the engine.
Fixed tank, ventilation, anti-siphon valves, air-leaks etc."

"Morten, I think i found my is

"Morten, I think i found my issue.

I took my carbs apart last nite and found debris in the lower carb, It was packed in around the needle and seat and appeared to be some sort of gasket material.

The material is rubbery and has a reddish orange color, Im not familure with gaskets in these engines any ideals where it may have come from?

I also took apart the thermostat housing last nite as well and put them in as you suggested, The port side was stuck open.

One more question for you if I may, Can i clean these carbs in a automotive solution? These vats are pretty strong and i dont want to have them F U B A R ed or can i just clean them with carb and choke cleaner?"

"Has anyone been using auto si

"Has anyone been using auto silicone in the tank system?(fuel sender etc)
Note that adding moisture remover in fuel tank, it may sometimes get reddish as well.
Use cab/choke/injector cleaner and compressed air.
I prefer to use an aerosol can with plastic tube to clean all channels."

"Morten, the answer is no i ha

"Morten, the answer is no i have had the fuel cell out and cleaned it and thanks for the info i will let you know how it goes on monday"

"Morten,

Everything is pret

"Morten,

Everything is pretty good with the 115, Cleaning the carbs was the issue and the engine temp is now the same on both sides.

It did start a lot better cold this time out and after a lake run i checked the plugs and they all had a slight coating of oil except one on the lower starboard side.

Should they all be dry or slightly coated with oil?

I do have one more question if i may.

I noticed out on the water after running the engine and then stopping for 30 minutes or so to fish, The engine will refire but idles really slow then dies but if i put it in neutral and give it a slight amount of throttle it does great!

Is this something i really need to concern myself with since i know the engine has a lot of hours on it and runs almost perfect otherwise?

Thank you so much my family had a great weekend fishing on lake and finally having a boat that works has made a huge difference!!!!"

Good to hear that things have

Good to hear that things have improved!
I would suggest a decent treatment with OMC Engine Tuner or Sea Foam.
Follow the instructions on the can to the last letter!
You may have quite some carbon build-up from running cold.
PS:
And I had some beautiful time out sailing last week in 30 knots++! No need for engine!

"Reddish Orange..... Could pos

"Reddish Orange..... Could possibly be Gasoila, a substance used to help seal gas/air leaks on carburetors etc. Usually found on core plugs."

"Morten,

30 knots++

"Morten,

30 knots++ WOW,im glad my first boat was not a sail boat i would be asking questions like how does one retrieve a boat from the bottom HA HA so does your family sail too?"
