I recently purchased a 1990 vip vision with a 2.3 and a 400 out drive it has a 19 pitch prop off a out board it seems to be totally wrong it poorpuses or how ever you spell it and seems to spin way to many rpm's im thinking of propping up to a 21 pitch x 13 is this a good or bad idea and im new here also.

porpoising is rarely a prop issue, but a cupped prop *might* help - a prop shop can cup it for around $50 usually
how many rpms?
your boat should run 5200-5400 at WOT when engine is well tuned

Only a drive setup for a 2.3 will work with a 2.3. Verify gear ratio. A 3.0 drive will not work on a 2.3. You term for the drive may have been wrong you don't have a 400 drive. Only stringer drives are 400. If you have rams it's a cobra, no rams a stringer or 400 drive.

I wouldn't worry about the ratio. The 2.3 uses the lowest gearing OMC ever put together, so any "wrong" drive would make your rpms lower, not higher.

just go up in prop pitch if you need to bring rpm down.

"400" as far as OMC props go, really just means 13 spline, which will fit 400 series, small gearcase Cobras, and V4 Johnson and Evinrude outboards
