I have a 1991 Reinell 173 Escort boat with a 1990 OMC 3.0L Sterndrive, model 302BMRPWR motor and a model 986321 outdrive. When I bought the boat it had an Evinrude 13.2X19 (765184) propeller on it. According to the service manual it should have a 14.5X19 (387161) or a 14.5X21 (391202) propeller on it.
When I recently needed to replace the propeller I went to the only local marina and bought a 14.5X19 propeller from them, I think they specialize in Merc's though. I brought it home, removed my old hub and installed it on the new prop. I slid the prop on the shaft and the first thing I noticed is the new prop went over the lower casing, not inside it like the old prop. So I proceeded slowly and as I was tightening the nut the prop stopped spinning freely and was rubbing against the lower casing at the top where the casing curves upwards. I returned the new prop and brought my old one with me. They pulled a 13.5X19 prop and we compared the end at the casing side. It was close and they said I could return it if it didn't fit. Well it was just a little bit too large. So I ended up calling a dealer 1.5 hours away and they said they had one for my setup. I drove over there and had them remove it from the box and it turned out it was like the first 14.5 prop I had gotten, we compared it to my old prop I had brought with me. He thought it was strange because the book called for the prop he pulled, which was hte same prop my service manual called for.
Turns out using the number on my old prop he had one which I bought and it fit on just like the old one.
Sorry this has been so long but here is my question. Is the propeller suppose to fit inside the lower casing like it does now, or is it suppose to fit over the lower casing?
Below are the pictures of the current propeller on my outdrive as well as the numbers on the old propeller. I shrunk the pictures down but I think you can see enough in them.
