1990 mercury 20 hp outboard

Just got my first fishing boat and need some guidance. The engine will turn on for a few seconds ut then cuts off. If i squeeze the tank hose to pump fuel it'll start up for a few seconds then cut off. Then itll be really hard to get it to start back up again. It will keep turning as if it wants to start but wont kick on. Any ideas?

You may not be following the starting routine properly. That or the idle up linkage is not adjusted properly. I suggest a talk with a competent Merc mechanic.

Start by checking your fuel. Always do this first when you have any running issues like this to ensure you're running fresh fuel to your engine. If you are good there, you might just need some carb work. Very common in the small outboards.
