"Hello,
I'm A new boat owner. I had my boat winterized by A professional last fall and all fluids changed. He told me my gimble is siezed up,my bellows shold make it another year and my throtle cable border line.
So I figured out what B.O.A.T really stands for;Bring Out Another Thousand.
I ran about $3000 worth of feul last year and intend to do so this year. The out drive does make a little grinding noise when I turn but the last owner told me it was normal operation.
question #1 I always believe in OEM parts. Should I continue this pratice?
question#2 Is there a standard when you drop your lower unit out? Like replace bellows, gimble, shifting rods, gaskets or a rebuild kit?

Bill"

"#1 Mercruiser has been aroun

"#1 Mercruiser has been around a long time. Many aftermarket parts are equal to Mercs. It's a matter of choice in many cases; just avoid Chinese made parts since their quality is only at the stage the Japanese copycats were in the 1950s.

#2 You will get a variety of ideas on replacing parts unnecessesarily. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is not a rule of thumb in boating. Age of the boat can be the decision maker for some parts. Example: Boat is 8-9 yrs. old and the exhaust bellows is cracked and needs replaced. The other ones look OK. Since the OD has to come off to replace it, replace all the bellows, lower shift cable and water inlet hose along with the water impeller if applicable. Also clean and inspect the gimbal bearing & inspect and lube the U-joints; consider replacement if questionable.

Many techs. like to remove the entire OD when replacing the impeller. This procedure allows you a chance to inspect all items describe above."

Get them fixed before you go out again! That's why you went to him in the 1st place; to get his opinion.
