"I replaced the impeller on my motor and it appears to be pumping water but no water is coming out of the "reject"(lack of better term, sorry) hole.I'm really new to working on an outboard...

I took the lower unit off again and used an airhose to try and clear the hose going up into the motor, again no air coming out of the "reject" hole...

I checked the alignment of the rubber boot at the end of the hose with the hole in the top of the pump and they seem to be aligned correctly...

There is water coming out of the hole where the shifter rod goes into the shaft housing, which leads me to believe the pump is working...

I'm at a loss,any help would be greatly appreciated,thanks in advance...Jim."

"I tried the weed eater line,it went in about 8"

The impeller is on the key,the fins looked straight(before installing) so I assumed it didn't matter which side was up...?

No water out the exhaust,I'm getting what looks like steam from the pee hole,I think it is the heat from the motor...I don't run it long, afraid of damaging the motor.

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

Is it possible that the hose from the motor to the pump is pinched or somehow disconnected?

If so how do I get at it to check it out?

Thanks again...Jim."

"Jim, the steam indicates the

"Jim, the steam indicates the water is NOT getting to the powerhead.

The water is fed to the powerhead via the "water tube" - a small copper tube that runs up the leg to the powerhead - it's the tube that you fit into the guide on top of the waterpump during reassembly.

Unfortunately, on the pre-95 models the water tube is flared at the top and actually screwed into the exhaust plate via a retainer. The only way to get a good look at it to separate the leg from the powerhead.

However, before getting that far, you have a couple of things to check. Make sure that the seal in the waterpump cover is installed correctly and is not split. It is the rubber part that presses into the stainless cover (number 29 in the picture) - make sure it is pressed in and sealing well - it should be totally flush except for the little tube part that gets covered by the tube guide (#32).

If that looks ok then you can use the tube guide (32) and jury rig it to the end of a garden hose (a good wad of packing/duct/electrical tape will serve the purpose on the short term).

Fit the guide connected to the garden hose back onto the water-tube (hiding up in the leg) and give it some water. The water should come right back down the exhaust housing (to the rear of the housing - the prop end of things (even though the lower is off). This will help you determine if you have a blockage in the powerhead waterchannels/jacket or the tube itself. You can also get your hand part way up the leg to feel the condition of the water tube. They do corrode if the motor has ever seen salt water. If it feels anything but "very smooth" it may need to be replaced....

"Jim, just re-read something from your first post. If from the previous diagram (29) the rubber boot is connected to the end of the water tube when you took off the lower unit, that is your problem.

Take it off the water-tube (it quite often pulls right out of the cover on disassembly) and press it back into (28) the waterpump cover then reassemble.

If that is your issue it will start gushing water for you when reinstalled....

It should look like this before fitting the tube...

"Graham, thank you so much for the info. When I took the pump out,the rubber boot stayed in.I think that is my problem,I didn't realize that it was supposed to attach to the pump,I thought it just pressed against it when you reinstalled the pump/lower unit.

Next question is how do I reconnect the hose into the rubber boot when I reinstall the pump/lower unit?Is there a trick to it?

Thanks again for the info, you guys are really helping me in a pinch and I really appreciate it (my son really wants to go fishing ha ha)...Jim."

"From the diagram above, numbe

"From the diagram above, number 32 is the water tube "guide". That usually remains stuck on the water tube as well. Pull it off and stick it on the rubber boot - that gives you a couple inches of "guide" to line up on the water tube itself.

Hey, once you have done it a 100 times or so, you will be able to marry them up with your eyes closed
