1990 mariner 30 hp float level

Hi I'm new to the forum and just after some advice please.

I have a 90 ish mariner 30hp 2 stroke (yamaha)

I'm trying to find out what the float level should be please.
I can't seem to find the sweet spot. It's either coughing and popping and cutting out, struggling for fuel or or pouring out fuel from the overflow and running but not well.

What is the engine serial number?

It's a bit hard to tell. It's damaged. It says mariner 30ae 689. L something 40297 and I think maybe a w on the end.
