Hi all , I bought *a used 1990 boat with 135 mariner. When I bought the boat did a compression test and it idled good.
It had 112-117 psi and warmed up good and water peed out good. *I brought it home and*
ran it with the muffs and it idles but when it revs up it falls on its face and seems to 4cycle. I checked spark good.
I pulled the plugs and they were oily and looked new. The guy said it ran good. Its late fall and prob wont get a chance to
run it on the lake. It had a constant beeping I unplugged the wire to the oil resovoir and it went away. Iam brand new to*
boats but familar with other two strokes like sleds and bikes. It just seems not to clean out when I rev it up and the more*
I ran it the worse it gets. By the way that is with fresh gas. Any ideas on whats up with it ie carbs, electrical? I do not have
a manual yet and will pick one up. I read on the forum the beeps could be a bad oil tank sensor so that is why I unplugged it.
I just bought the boat and kinda scared it could be a something big. Thanks Vince

If you are pretty much laying it up for the winter anyhow I would suggest you pull the carbs and do them over the off season - take a look at the fuel pump while you are at it.

What you describe sounds like it's starting to "starve" when you increase the load - this is almost always carb related.

"The guy said it ran good" - yep, and the motor is absolutely perfect - that's why he's dumping it :)

Sorry for being skeptical.

Any motor that is "new to you" I always count on

1) cleaning/maybe rebuilding the carbs (aside from the removal it only takes about 15 minutes to rebuild one of these carbs if you are already familiar/mechanically inclined)

2) replacing the diaphram in the fuel pump

3) replace the impeller and any other waterpump seals/gaskets that look questionable and changing the lower gear oil

and in this case, run a pre-mix of 50:1 until you check that the oil pump is working the way it is supposed to.

(note on that one - personally I like oil injection (or whatever you want to call it) - it almost never fails but gets blamed for practically every woe on the motor)

Once the motor is up and running you can follow this proceedure to test the oil injection:

You will need a graduated cylinder (or similar)...

I feel the same way and gave him a call and he said it was sold as is. Nice hey! Would you be able to send me a link to a manual or some tune up links for this motor. I have had many bikes and sled carbs apart the pilots and smaller jets plug with the crappy new gas. Thanks Vince
