"Hi gang,

"Hi gang,
I have a 1990 120 johnson v4-vro,
I had problems with it overheating moments after reaching plane it would sound the alarm and shutdown..s.l.o.w. mode i think,
So i replaced the complete impeller with a kit,and rebuilt the thermostats as well.
Now it shuts down about the same amount of time but with no alarms.

It will idle in the no wake zone as i leave the ramp for ever but as soon as it reaches plane for under a min it shuts down,

I drained some fuel it appears clear and water free.

My batterys are old and weak is it possible they can be a factor?

Also i see the brown wire leading to the temp gage on the side of the motor but only on 1 side so is it only reading the temp on one side of the motor?

I dont have the tools to do a compression test but i see it mentioned alot in this forum."

"first,...if ur batt's,..r

"first,...if ur batt's,..r admittantly,..'old and weak'...replace them,..before u get stranded..i dont think,ur sensors r lying to u,in this case...i would go back in to the wtr pump,if this scenario,came into my shop,...which it does,...back to the pump,must be verified..ok...proceed from there....u r using a FACTORY..service manual??"

Ok i guess i will drop the low

Ok i guess i will drop the lower unit and inspect that the impeller i installed was properly done.
Also i have a manual from CLYMER for my motor as a guide.

I havent replaced the small hoses from head to head ect and they called the diverters?

I must admit that the bolt that goes thru the shift shaft was a bitch to put back in but after i bought a swivel for my socket it got it in.

Do i need a senser on both sides of the motor to check temps?

No but it was stiff and holdin

No but it was stiff and holding its shape unlike the new 1 that i had to turn clockwise to place it in the new housing.

"New batterys, cleaned carbs,

"New batterys, cleaned carbs, ran 4 min then same problems ,
lower unit droping now i will inspect and come back with my findings..."

I have a Vro 90 that just had

I have a Vro 90 that just had new piston and rings put in it. The mechanic put in new plugs and impelars so it is gapped right and stays cool. It starts but soon after it will just quit.
At other times it runs a 3/4 throttle for 5 minutes then just starts bogging down as if it's not getting gas. If I hold in the choke it runs again. The mechanic who I paid 2000.00 the rebuild the engine says its a fuel/vro problem and refused to fix it saying it's not in his area of expertise and wasn't part of the rebuild deal. I will post his name if I find it neccessary. I just want to fix the problem and go fishing. Please Help!

"I droped the lower unit and n

"I droped the lower unit and noticed the o-ring that goes in the impeller housing was hanging out and was not sealing the cover i know it was wrong but would it cause the problems im having?

picture of bad gasket install.

Ok fixed the impeller housing

Ok fixed the impeller housing gasket and installed a water seperator and new fuel line and ball pump.

Tested in river and the motor shutdown after 5 min with no alarms and wouldnt restart for 10 min then idled back to ramp running at idle very poorly and dosent idle well not even on the tank in the driveway now?
any ideas .
Plugs wet and black cleaned still rough running at idle..

"did you ever check the T-Stat

"did you ever check the T-Stats???? Did you install the impeller upside down?? (lol, that might not matter)

Flush out cooling system. Do you operate in salt water?

also need to check temp sensor on side of motor with no wire. does it look like there should be a wire/sensor if you compare it to the other side of the motor with the wire?"

"Forgot to mention installed n

"Forgot to mention installed new thermostats ,flushed system with lower unit off great flow,
I have a temp probe but its only on 1 side of the motor with the brown wire.

Question what and where are the "deverters"?"

diverters are located in your

diverters are located in your cooling jacket under each head. They divert the water around the cylinder. A lot of people who do rebuilds forget or don't put them back in. They should be in.

Hopefully I'm giving you the right info.

I would pull the head off the bank of cylinders with the compression sky high and take a look.
