1990 Johnson shifting problem

" I have a 1990 Johnson 30 Hp tiller (sn J30RESB) converted to a long shaft. This past weekend I experienced a problem shifting from reverse to neutral. When moving the shift handle from reverse to neutral, the reverse does not disengage. Shifter must be moved to forward then back to neutral. This does not seem to be the case when shifting from forward to neutral. Could this be an adjustment or could it be a more serious problem, such as clutch dogs? "

"Johnnie..... If the engine shifted properly after the shaft change, Although it could happen, it's unlikely that something went wrong in the lower unit.

I would suspect that the adjustable trunion on the shift cable (where it clamps into the engine socket) has slipped out for some reason. If so, the cure (if needed) is to wrap some electrical tape around it, then clamp it back where it belongs. Let us know what you find.

The conversion was done prior to my ownership (this is my third season). The shifting always seemed kind of mushy. Since this is tiller steering I don't have a shift cable. Unless I am misunderstanding you, and you are referring to p/n 38 ADJ LEVER AND SHAFT ASSY. "
