I acquired a boat with a 1990 Johnson 88 SPL that had broken piston rings that was in need of a rebuild as a project. Long story short I got a rebuilt powerhead from a 90 Johnson which was installed and ended up with 2 complete sets of carbs. I pieced together parts from all of the carbs which included metal bowls, new jets for the bowls and installed them. It never really ran at idle that great until after it warmed up. A by the book link and sync brought it a long way but it would still bog down when I tried to accelerate off idle until it was warm. I pulled the carbs apart to clean them and noticed all 4 of the idle orifice jets were #41, the second set of carbs was #34. In looking at parts diagrams the carbs should have #38. Would this make that big of a difference?
Should I swap out the 41s for a set of 38 to see if it solves my cold idle and low rpm bogging? I noticed all of this size motor (88-115) all have 38 idle orifice and am not really sure where the 34 or 41 parts came from however I have read that sometimes there are different model carbs used which may be the reason for the different sizes.
