1990 Johnson 15hp - Kill Switch question

Hello - I have a 1990 Johnson 15hp outboard motor. I recently had it in the shop to repair a no spark condition - replaced the charger coil, kill switch and a sensor. The issue is the kill switch replacement no longer has a tether cord - it is a kill switch only. Through a confusing turn of events, I can't return the motor to the shop to get the correct switch with tether replaced.

I see many tether kill switches on-line that I am thinking I can easily be wired on to the handle. Is the ignition on this motor normally "OPEN" or "CLOSED"? I do not want to spend another $120 on the Johnson version if I can easily purchase a $12 version and wire it in line with the switch on the handle.

Comments, ideas or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Can you help? I have a 60 hp tiller Johnson, when I twist the throttle it moves the idle sleeve (kill button) enough that the motor dies from activating the kill button. I was idling when motor died and could not restart. Crank , crank crank. Later, after thinking about it, I suspected the kill switch, because I have been noticing it does not stay in the same I have little experience with repair, but I removed the throttle twist, examined the kill button, seems simple enough. I noticed the whole kill mechanism moves a little bit like a c clip may be missing, allowing the plastic kill mechanism to move enough to kill the motor. I have tried wrapping the idle threaded adjustment with Teflon tape to firm it up, which worked for awhile. Anyone had this issue. thanks.
