So I picked up a boat today with a 1990 Johnson j90tla for a good deal and the motor runs great after it’s ran for a min, idles beautifully. Then if you cut it off it’s hard to start again. The way it worked was he would start it then rev it in neutral for a second then kind rush Into gear and take off and as I said when he stopped again it idled like new. Anyone got any suggestions to make it a little easier to start? I’ll add he didn’t prime the bulb before starting. Thanks

You must prime the bulb .---Raise the fast idle lever----Push key in and hold it in while cranking the motor over.

Fast idle lever? Not sure it has one or maybe I just don’t know what I’m talking about. Would it be attached to the throttle? If so I’m pretty sure my boat doesn’t have one

There you go time to talk to a shop , knowledgeable friend or read the owners manual.----Post a picture of your control box.---Most have a method of increasing idle speed without shifting !!

Mine the throttle handle actually pulls away from the boat while in neutral and then you can push it forward without being in gear. Will take a pic in the morning

I have that motor and Racer is correct. You need to prime with bulb until hard, put throttle about halfway (in neutral), and push in on key while cranking. Should only take a second or two for it to fire. You can push the key in again to help it stay running if needed, then lower the throttle speed back to idle.

UPDATE Went out and primed the bulb set throttle to about 1/4 throttle pushed the key in and turned the key. It pooted once and I let go the turned the key without pushing it in and it fired right up and idled wonderfully. Thanks you guys you made me a happy camper. Tight lines!
