1990 Evinrude 8hp charging coil

I was having cold start problems on my Evinrude 8. The fuel system and spark plugs were all working well so I pulled the flywheel and discovered the charging coil was leaking oily tar. The ohm reading was fine on it (560 according to the manual). I went ahead and ordered a new Evinrude coil but it tested out at 880 ohms. I sent it back but the next one came back 880 also. The coil should be 560 +/- 25 ohms. Evinrude either has made a bad bunch of coils or this one was meant for a different motor. Perhaps someone can tell me whether it's ok to put this coil on my motor. It doesn't seem as though I'm going to get one that reads 560 and marineengine.com says they won't send another one.

Model # of your motor ?---What manual did you use to get the 560 ohm value ??-----Evinrude does not send 2 bad coils out of the warehouse!!

Model number E8resr. OMC service manual for Johnson and Evinrude. It covers Junior thru 8 models. On page 4 my model is listed. On page 3-25 (Ignition System) the ohm reading is listed. I don't see how I could have made a mistake testing, there's only two wires. I asked if they could test the replacement before they sent it out but they said they don't do that.

According to MM the original part # 583485 is NLA and is replaced by # 584333, although other parts suppliers still list it as available and in stock.
Maybe this replacement part has a different resistance.

I too have an 8hp Evinrude, & factory service manual. Specs for the coils are listed on two pages as 900 +/- 100.
Bolt the coil you bought onto the kicker & see if it runs.
mine starts harder in cold weather, (I’m talking near freezing temps), make sure the choke plate is closing completely, & twist the throttle up a bit, mine then starts in 2-3 pulls.

Yes the part I have from Evinrude is #584333. I have not tried to install it because of the extremely different ohm reading I'm getting. I'm worried in time it may fry the powerpack. As racerone and the sales rep told me it's extremely rare for Evinrude to put out multiple faulty parts. However, this part replaces a huge list of models all the way up to 50 hp. Maybe it will work just fine regardless of the different reading.

I think I'll put things back together this weekend. Thanks everybody for all the good info. Outside of this problem the motor is fine. I'll report back on what happens.

Okay, good....thanks. When you get it back together, check that the nice hot blue/white spark can jump across at least a 7/16" gap. If things are good even a 1/2" arc is quite common.

I finally had the time to install the coil. This is definitely the wrong coil. It is too big from front to back. The screw holes are oblong for adjustment so even when mounting the coil as far back towards the crank shaft as possible the flywheel barely makes it on. I went ahead and put the flywheel on and kept the spark plug wires disconnected. When you pull the rope the timing plate moves. It's hitting and there's no way to mount the coil any further away from the flywheel.

No. I put the old part in for comparison and there's no hang up. When I compare the measurements of these two parts and how they line up with the plate they are very close. However the new part has a metal face to it whereas the old part is all plastic except for the contact. Seems a little big. I'm still fooling with it but running out of time today. (This motor was rebuilt by a veteran mechanic. This is literally the only problem I'm having.)

Strange that.--I believe these charge coils are nearly all the same.-----Under the flywheel uses different length wires and therefor a different part #----Are these factory parts or AMAZON specials ???

This is an Evinrude part bought here at Marine Engine. Although it does say made in China. I'm running out of time to work on it any more today. Here's a pic.

Good. That coil should work....I see where it is rubbing. Might need to enlarge mounting holes with a small chain saw file.....made in Taiwan, eh?

Ok I figured out the problem. The wires coming out of the new part are much shorter than the wires in the old part. They were not seating properly under the power pack which was preventing me from mounting everything in a perfect circle. After maneuvering wires and mounting the coil as far back as it would go it came together with no scraping. The specs are not perfect but the motor is running fine. The list of motors that this coil replaces is huge. I guess I can't expect it to be a perfect fit.

Mikey-----The ignition and the function of that coil is the same on many motors.----It works brilliantly on a 4 HP ( 1979 say ) motor up to a 2 cylinder 60 HP motor and on say a 2007 model 15 HP.-----The same part and the same fit and function.-----Different part # for a few years because the WIRES coming out of the coil are a different length.----All work and fit the same way !!!

It interesting that the ohm reading is so different and I almost had to do what you suggested and file the mounting holes a little to push it back. Now that I've been through the job I'll be prepared for any other problems that pop up. Thanks for all the help!

Yes, good job. The resistance changes, as science/engineering evolve....so....the parts are designed to be compatible. Racer, Joe, Mr. Scott, Pappy, Gator....so many techs here with experience beyond imagine....but it can still be difficult to "see" through the eyes of the OP.
