i bought a 13' whaler with a 1990 evinrude 28spl outboard (of course, without an owners manual).
when i pump the primer bulb, fuel flows out of the base of the red valve on the electric primer. i have the repair manual for the motor, and i will be ordering a replacement red valve and o-ring which hopefully will solve the problem.
the motor does start, but i'm curious as to the function and operation of the electric primer. i have done some searching and have seen pictures of the electric primer from this engine, but mine is slightly different. mine has a black knurled knob atop the red valve, and the pictures i have seen, plus the exploded parts diagram in my service manual, show that the red valve has no provision for the knurled knob.
i have also read that the primer operates by pushing in the key before starting. my console has a spring-loaded toggle switch which i believe is how the primer is triggered.
so, what is the function of the primer, how is the red valve adjusted (meaning, how do you know where to position the pointer), and what is the function of the knurled knob?
thanks in advance!
