"Finially back out on the wate

"Finially back out on the water with this total re-bulid that I have been working on for several months now. I made it through all the adjustments such as the Timing Pointer, Throttle Plate Sync., Cam Pickup, WOT Stop, and the idle timing.

Now I am at the point where I need to check the Maximum Spark Advance. The service manual states that the proper test propeller must be installed. My local marinas have a 2-3 week backlog. I certainly don't want to screw anything up at this point but is there another way to check this?"

"Check the idle timing using

"Check the idle timing using a timing light. Now observe how far the timer base can advance from this point. Do this part statically (engine not running). You can use the scale on the flywheel to see how many degrees this advance is. Add it to the idle timing that you measured and you will be pretty close to the maximum advance. If it is too much adjust the max advance screw. It is a good idea to be conservative here. A couple of degrees will not make much difference, so it pays to set the advance a couple of degrees short of the maximum advance called for in the specs.

"Tony, your procedure on setti

"Tony, your procedure on setting the Maximum Spark Advance without the engine running worked incredibly well. I was able to double check the setting on the lake yesterday with a friend of mine driving and it was right on the mark that I set with your procedure!

This was a great tip – thanks again.
