" i am thinking about buying a boat with a 1990 Evinrude 200 on it. appreciate any feeback on the following questions?
- if engine runs good, should i rebuilt it for reliability?
- any design flaws/problems with this engine?
- what should i check besides the compression? "

"Ed... That engine has a 35 amp charging system which runs hot (the nature of the beast). The 35 amp stator sits under the flywheel. It would be wise to remove the flywheel to make sure that the large black coils on that stator (an expensive item) ARE NOT leaking and melting down. Those black coils are the beginning of the ignition system. Also check to make sure that none of thr flywheel magnets have come loose, are cracked, broken, etc (flywheel = also expensive). Compression on all cylinders should be even and in the area of 100lbs. Spark (with plugs out) should jump 7/16" on all cyl. Check the lower unit for lube. There should be no traces of water or metal filings. A small amount of fuzzy filings are okay, but no metal chips, splinter like flakes, etc.

"The puller can be obtained from any automotive type shop, or mobile tool company such as Matco, Snap On, etc. The puller must be the type that will allow three bolts to be screwed into the three threaded areas you see surrounding the flywheel nut. The flywheel nut must be torqued to 145 foot pounds.
