"I removed the intake manifold and sure enough found both of the lower reed box screws missing.

I further noticed that the gasket on the reed box directly above the one with the screws out is starting to work its way out

This is all I have left of the gasket on the reed box with the screws missing:

Any ideas on why these gaskets are failing?
Did the gaskets fail and the screws loosen or vice-versa?
My service manual says to put the new gaskets in dry (I bought them here).
What do you think happend to the rest of the gasket pieces?"

"most likely loose screws caus

"most likely loose screws caused gasket failure. most gaskets now have printed sealer on them.
if you use anything at all, use a shellac.
looks like you sealed the screws. did you use loc-tite on the threads? I think I would. gaskets should pass without causing problems, unless hung in the reed valve itself."

Amazing! I had over thirty yea

Amazing! I had over thirty years in the business and never once encountered that problem. Personally I never used anything but oil on those gaskets. Loctite apparently is a must on those screws.

"There appears to be a rubber coating on my reed boxes - is this normal or custom?

Also, I checked these with a flashlight and there is definately light comming through the edges of the reeds. Does that indicate that the reeds need to be replaced? The picture is not very good...

If I need to replace the reeds, will the Boyesen Reeds work with my Rubber Coated Boxes?

Thanks"

The rubber coating is " pr

The rubber coating is " production " stuff. It is the reason for the quiet of newer motors and has been in use since the mid 80's. Reed valves ( metal to metal ) make a lot of noise.Time will tell if the rubber stands up to the new fuels of today.
