"Had my boat out over the week

"Had my boat out over the weekend and was running about 3/4 full throttle when suddenly lost power. Immediately took down to an idle and she would barely run at all then I shut down. Quick check on the lake with my Joe Reeves spark tester revealed a good spark on all six (6). I barely got her started back up and limped back to the launch. You can clearly hear back pressure coming from the lower two (2) carbs. I am hoping that the problem is something in the intake - like reed valves.

I am looking for some advice on how to start. Compression test, pull the heads and look for damage or go right to the intake manifold.

Thanks,

Bob Stoerzer"

"Compression should be in the

"Compression should be in the range of 90 to 95 psi and even on all cylinders. The exception being that the starboard bank usually reads about 5 psi higher than the port bank.

I assume that you have the spark tester's gap setting set to 7/16", and as you state, you have good spark on all six cylinders so I'll skip that part.

I'd suggest that you DO NOT remove the cylinder heads UNLESS severe compression problem exists OR metal particles exist on any of the spark plugs.

If blow back exists at any of the carburetor throats, fuel should spit back thru tham also. Should this condition exist, it would be proper to examine the reed valves etc."

"Thanks very much for your advice Joe. Yes I should have mentioned that the is fuel comming from the carbs.

What exactly can happen to a reed valve? If I am lucky enough to find that as the only problem, is there a prticular replacement brad I should purchase?

Thanks"

about the only thing that goes

about the only thing that goes wrong with reeds is dirt/ foreign material can hold them open. Then damage from internal engine failure can destroy them. If fuel pours out of a carburetor when you prime the bulb you have a float stuck in the carburetor.
