1990 90hp mariner RPM's increased out of the blue

Went fishing this weekend. Motor ran great for two days. Then went to start it to run in for the end of the day and the RPM's at idle jumped up to 3500 and would not come back down to normal. Made it real fun loading on trailer. Any ideas as the root of the problem welcomed.

Thanks for the reply. Could it possible be just a fuel issue ( something in carb etc)? The reason I ask is cause I didn't think a spun prop would do that in neutral.
