I was reading an old post by J

I was reading an old post by Joe about using the small round rectifier wich is cheaper than the water cooled regulator. Will this work on the 1990 hp v-4 the block has the mounting holes by the terminal block. What is the diffence in the function of the two parts. On the brp parts list it said the rectirier was for the 88hp.On my 90 hp i do have PTT and I have the VRO disconnected.

"Note the difference in the words 'rectifier' and 'regulator'.

The first might charge Your batteries well above boiling as it does NOT regulate (limmit) charging voltage.
Then You might be in problem as there are different stators, the PT stators might blow Your rectifier as it does not handle the amps at maximum charge capacity."

"Thanks Morten, I found some past post's that explain the difference. I am going to replace the regulator. My concern is snaping the bolts that hold it to the block. Is this a common problem?? I am concerned because I had problems with the water jacket cover bolts in the past."

"I replaced the water-cooled regulator/rectifer on my 1990 90hp Johnson about a month ago. No problem with the bolts. Of course, I had to remove the flywheel for access, but once that was done, everything went smooth as silk. I DID spray the bolts first with PB just in case.....

This is where I got mine for $54.95 plus shipping. It may be cheaper here on marineengine.com, so check there first.

"Thanks, I just got the regula

"Thanks, I just got the regulator from CDI electronics cdi1193-4204 ebay for 51.95 from ebasicpower. The original one had one yellow and one yellow w/ gray stripe. The new one has two yellow. The rest of the wires match up fine. What dot hte yellow wires do and are they interchangable"

"If it wasn't raining cats

"If it wasn't raining cats & dogs here in St. Petersburg, I'd go out and look to see what I did because I had the same situation with the yellow wires. (Additionally, mine also has PTT and I disconected my VRO too.)

If I remember correctly, it seems to me that the yellow wires are interchangable and it doesn't matter which goes where as long as they both go back where the old yellow wires were connected. Apparently, this is okay because those wires carry AC and, consequently, doesn't matter which is which. I guess it was cheaper for CDI to buy solid yellow wire than to buy yellow with a gray stripe AND pure yellow!!

If you don't get a more official or more reliable reply this evening, I'll go out tomorrow and check out how I installed mine and let you know."
