1990 70hp shiftrod position

what is the proper position for the shiftrod when reinstalling the lower unit on this engine?

The off center top portion of the shift rod would face rearwards.

I don't know the actual measurement length of the shift rod pertaining to that 1990 70hp model, BUT the earlier models were 21-23/32" from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole.

If this is not correct, I'm sure another member will advise you.
