1990 40hp Tilt trim issue.

Hi people! Was wondering if there is anyone with some insight on a problem with my trim and tilt hydraulic? The trim tilt goes up and down with no issues. However the motor wont stay up when tilted up. It slowly falls back down. Plus, it won't trim at all when motoring around the lake. Prob same issue. I've opened the reservoir plug and lots of fluid in there. I've even checked the manual release valve and that was nice and tight. Anyone have any other ideas or possible solutions apart from having to replace the unit?

Thanks in advance.

Step 1- remove the manual release valve and make sure the o-rings are intact and in place. Step 2 (if the release valve is OK)- remove the tilt relief valveing and inspect the o-rings and seals for debris or damage. There's a couple of more steps before you should consider replacing the entire trim unit (unless you happen to have a working trim unit just laying around collecting dust), but usually the problem is in the relief valve or the tilt relief valve.

Thanks for the advice. I'll def get to checking those out. Now with that being said, I've never dealt with these units before. Would I have to take the hydraulic lift off the boat, or can this all be done without having to take it off? Also, will I also have to drain the fluid out of the unit as well?

Sorry for the delay in answering- i posted a message yesterday, but apparently it was "moderated" as unfit. Anyway, i presume you don't have a service manual, but if you go to boatinfo.no/lib/library.html you will find a manual pertaining to your outboard. These manuals cannot be downloaded, only used as reference. The section on power trim will guide you through troubleshooting and disassembly/assembly steps.
