1990 40 hp Hydraulic Problem

Hi Everyone,

Im new to the forum and wanted to ask a question.

I have a 1990 40HP motor that has been used twice, the previous owner left the engine upright on his boat, now i have a hard time lifting the engine up and down and sometimes it requires 2 people to lift it up, I think it might be an issue with the hydraulic but im not sure what to do.

It does not have a power tilt/trim although i will be buying one for the boat in the meantime im looking for any solution possible to make the hydraulic smoother.

Many thanks and i look forward to your reply.

Scott

That type problem is usually caused by the tilt/steering tube that has a large retaining nut on each side. Corrosion builds up, resulting in a tightening action upon the swivel bracket that the engine hinges on.

Loosen one nut somewhat, then hvaing the engine locked in the tilt position, use a 2x4 or board of your choice, set it against the swivel bracket close to the steering tube and belt it with a large hammer.

When it frees up, spray it with WD40 or a lubricant/cleaner of your choice, grease the fittings, then tighten the steering tube nuts as you see fit.
