So I have a 1990 bayliner capri with the above motor. Recently I had ran it out of gas (image that, fuel gauge doesn’t work) and have since ran into stalling issues when making turns when pulling a tuber. A local mechanic recommended that it could be the ignition system. I replaced the coil, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Changed the oil and filter, put it on muffs in the driveway and let it idle. Seemed as it was running much smoother and let it get up to about 190’f and shut it down. Brought it to a local lake, ran a few hot laps with the wife cruising around 3000rpm, few gradual turns, drove about 15 minutes and was thinking “Great! That could have been it!” I went out by myself and did some driving as if I was pulling a tuber, sure as sh:t, it stalled out. Tried to restart it and it ran for about 10 seconds and stalled again.
One thing I forgot to mention that it doesn’t want to turn over after stalling. I can let it sit for a few hours and then it will turn over and start, but hadn’t really tried running tubers after the first time it stalled. I am starting to look into the fuel system as maybe something was picked up from the bottom of the fuel tank, but what puzzles me is that it won’t turn over after initial stalling. I’m convinced that it isn’t internal as when it does restart there is no sounds as if bearings are bad, or grinding or other awful noises.
Anyone else experience this? All of the research I do seems to conclude to electrical or fuel. The thing I cannot understand is why so hard to restart.
Tyia for any help here!
